A smiling family of five with a woman, a man, and three children gathered outdoors on wooden stairs, enjoying a sunny day.

OUR STORY

This book started with our son.

We’re Jeffery and Laura May, parents to JoJo and Jackson. When Jackson was diagnosed with autism at three years old, we began learning alongside him, trying to better understand the way he experiences the world and, eventually, help him understand autism for himself.

As Jackson grew, we searched for books that could explain autism in a way that felt relatable, positive, and true to the child we knew. We wanted something that acknowledged the challenges without making autism feel like something was wrong with him.

We couldn’t quite find the book we were looking for. So we decided to create it.

Our Amazing Minds grew from our family’s story into something we hope can serve many others: helping autistic children better understand themselves, while helping siblings, classmates, friends, parents, and teachers better understand them, too.

Our faith is at the heart of that mission. We believe every child is fearfully and wonderfully made, with their own strengths, challenges, personality, purpose, and incredible way of experiencing the world.

This is more than a book to us. It’s our way of helping every child see there is something amazing about the way their mind works.
